New Stargate Movies Soon?

Update (April 2011): There was a great dream that the Stargate movies would continue the series.  However, in April 2011 it was officially announced by Brad Wright that the Stargate series was ending and no additional movies would be made.  Check out the Round Table coverage on the end of the Stargate era for more information.

Word is coming out that there is a chance we might see a couple more Stargate movies in the future.  Robert C. Cooper has written scripts for a new Stargate SG-1 film and a new Stargate Atlantis film.  The question is, when might we see these be filmed and given to us as DVD goodness.  The simple answer is, not a clue.

If you’re wondering why that is, Cooper offered this insight during an interview with the SciFi Wire:

“It’s tough, because we were very successful with the first two SG-1 movies,” Cooper said. “Since then, the economics have changed a little bit. DVDs aren’t selling the same way they were when we released those even just a year, and a year and a half ago.”

If you’re upset, blame the economy I guess.  I think its a cop-out as its been proven repeatedly that SciFi fans specifically Stargate fans will pay the money for DVD continuations to the series.  I’m sure the fans would buy, and at this point in the franchise I really doubt that they will be bringing in new fans with the direct to DVD movies.  But what do I know, I’m a fan already.

If the two DVDs are made, they will stand independent of the upcoming Stargate Universe series, meaning there will be no tie-in between the shows like we saw with Atlantis and SG-1.

“They would stand alone,” Cooper said. “The Atlantis one takes place shortly after the end of season five. The SG-1, I think, takes place sometime in an intermediary period between when the SG-1 movies left off and when Universe began.”
