New The Dark Knight Rises Trailer [Update]

Holy crap this new trailer looks good. I’ll try to do some analysis tonight.

Update: Better late than never, but I do have some analysis for the trailer.  At least I do after I pick my jaw up off the floor haha.  This trailer was that good.

  1. It looks like Bane will break the Bat in some way.  We’ve gotten that thought from past trailers but this really seems to hint at it a lot more.  That probably explains why Bruce is walking around with a cane in part of the trailer.
  2. Bane knows that Bruce Wayne is Batman.  We kind of figured that would happen but the trailer confirms it.
  3. There seems to be a time gap between when Batman is ‘broken’ and when he returns to save Gotham.  The trailer shows Bruce with hair length varying and all the past trailers have shown Bruce with two different beards and clean shaven.
  4. I want this movie now.  This movie looks damn good and I cannot wait for it to come out!

The Dark Knight Rises Theatrical Trailer and Impressions

The theatrical trailer for The Dark Knight Rises has officially been released.  If you’re like me and resisted the urge to watch the bootleg copies its well worth checking out now.

In typical Christopher Nolan fashion the trailer really doesn’t give anything away but does its job in getting you amped up for the final movie.  There were a few cool little things I picked up on in the trailer.

  1. There was a pretty cool Easter egg in the beginning of the trailer.  The crowd at the football stadium are holding up signs.  Once sign spells out Rouges.  If you look at the R, its shaped the like the R that is traditionally used as Robin’s logo.
  2. Harvey Dent’s reputation appears to be intact.  Based on the pictures over Gordon’s shoulder it would appear that Gordon and Batman have kept their pact to hide Harvey’s crimes.
  3. Selina Kyle appears to be at a masquerade ball dancing with Bruce Wayne, and it certainly looks like she has cat ears in her hair.
  4. It seems that Bruce Wayne is in prison.  Not sure whether this is a flashback or not.  I’m sure we’ll find out.
  5. Bane is hard to understand.  However, that is probably how he would sound in the comics as well with his mouth completely covered by the mask.  I’m going to have to pay close attention to understand everything he says.
  6. The Batwing is awesome looking. ’nuff said.
  7. The trailer is lacking in the amount of screen-time give to Batman.  He had very little time on screen, however if the Bat is broken it would make sense that he doesn’t appear very much.
  8. They included the Joker’s theme from The Dark Knight in the trailer.  You can hear it as the prisoners are escaping and right before the chanting starts.  I thought it was a great callback to the last movie to include Joker’s music. (Yes, I own The Dark Knight score and listen to it regularly.  That’s how I picked up on the music)

The Dark Knight Rises Poster

Yesterday we were hopeful to get a new trailer for Christopher Nolan’s 3rd Batman movie.  It didn’t happen, although some free tickets were given away for the preview screening next week.

We were lucky enough to get the second poster for The Dark Knight Rises… or at least we got something that looks like it could be a new poster.  I’m not 100% sure this new poster is real, but it does look good.  It certainly indicates that Bane will damage Batman, and potentially break him.

The Dark Knight Rises Eight Years Later

Empire Magazine was incredibly lucky and scored a lot of coverage on Christopher Nolan’s upcoming movie The Dark Knight Rises.  That’s good for fans like us because it gets a lot of information out about the film which in turn leads to more fan excitement. The biggest piece to come from this interview is in regards to how long after The Dark Knight the new movie takes place.  According to Nolan:

“Our story picks up EIGHT years after The Dark Knight”.
“In terms of finishing our story and increasing its scope, we were trying to craft an epic”
“It’s really all about finishing Batman and Bruce Wayne’s story. We left him in a very precarious place. Perhaps surprisingly for some people, our story picks up quite a bit later, eight years after The Dark Knight. So he’s an older Bruce Wayne; he’s not in a great state. With our choice of villain and with our choice of story we are testing Batman both physically as well as mentally. Also, in terms of finishing the our story and increasing its scope, we were trying to craft epic so the physicality of the film became very important.”

Eight years after the last movie is a long time, and there are many things that could have occurred in Gotham during that time.  Its also a very long time for Batman to have been an outlaw and having to evade the police.  There’s a part of me that thinks this jump in time leaves the door open for stories to be told during this timeframe in another form like comic book or animated movies.  That would be pretty cool.  This jump forward in time will also allow us to see what a fully fleshed out Nolan version of Batman is like.  Bruce Wayne will be firmly established as Batman in the new film and in essence be a certified badass.

Batman hasn’t really had a physical opponent since Batman Begins with Ra’s al Ghul.  The Joker was all about mind games and Batman didn’t have to fight any dangerous opponents.  It will be interesting to see how well this older Batman will fare against a physical opponent.  In the movie timeline Batman is probably in his late 30s or early 40s and arguably no longer as his physical peak.  How well will this play into the movie, might this be a reason for Bane to defeat the Dark Knight?

The next piece to come out of this interview is in regard’s to Bane’s mask.  This tidbit is courtesy of costume designer Lindy Hemming:

“He was injured early in his story. Hes suffering from pain and he needs gas to survive. He cannot survive the pain without the mask. The pipes from the mask go back along his jawline and feed into the thing at the back where there are two cannisters of what ever it is..the anasthetic”

Its an interesting take on why Bane would need to wear a mask.  This makes me think that venom will not play a role in the film.  What I’m wondering is if the anesthetic provided by the mask will dull all pain.  If that’s the case Bane will be able to take a lot of punishment and feel nothing.  That is something that Batman can’t do, regardless of his mental discipline.

This information has definitely done its job in getting me more interested in the upcoming movie.  I’m especially interested in seeing how things have changed after eight years.  On a side note, did anyone else notice that it will have been roughly eight years since Batman Begins was released when The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters?

The Dark Knight Rises on Empire Magazine

Empire Magazine has been well known for its coverage of superhero movies.  This time they’ve gotten some exclusive shots of Batman and Bane from this summer’s The Dark Knight Rises.  This is only the second official picture we’ve gotten of Bane so its interesting from that perspective.

Before I get the e-mail and comment reminders that I went spoiler free this is not considered spoilers for the movie. The pictures here are officially released by Warner Bros and fair game for me to look at.

To be honest, I’m still not sold on the look of movie Bane.  The comic book version with the lucha libre mask is so iconic its really hard to get used to a new look.  However, this is a Christopher Nolan movie, so I will give him the benefit of the doubt.

Batman: Arkham City Figures

DC Direct released some pretty awesome looking action figures to tie in with the game Batman Arkham Asylum, and it looks like they will be doing the same with the upcoming sequel Batman Arkham City.  Just like last time, these figures look really good.  I’ve taken to hanging action figures on the wall in my home office to add an extra nerdy flair, and I think I’ll be adding at least one of these figures to my wall.

From left to right you have Harley Quinn as she appears in the game, Bruce Wayne as Batman unmasked, and Tim Drake in his in-game version of the Robin costume.  All three figures look great, but I think I’ll be looking to add the Bruce Wayne figure to my collection.  The fact that he’s holding one of the Bat-gadgets just makes the figure look even cooler.  Anyone else looking at getting some of these figures?

Batman and Robin Post DC Reboot

There has been a great deal of confusion regarding DC Comics and the line wide reboot/relaunch of all their published comics.  One of the biggest points of confusion is that in the comics everything has only moved 5 years forward from the origin.

Here’s how that gets confusing for Batman fans.  In 5 years Bruce Wayne has had four, maybe five Robins.

  1. Dick Grayson
  2. Jason Todd
  3. Tim Drake
  4. Stephanie Brown (maybe)
  5. Damien Wayne
That’s a new Robin each year which really doesn’t make sense when you consider that fact that pre-reboot Dick was Robin for many years before developing his Nightwing persona.  How does DC explain the fact that there has been a new Robin nearly every year?  Simple just check out the ‘New 52 FAQ‘ that has been made available to comic book retailers.  Here’s how the FAQ explains the existence of so many Robins in such a short timeline.

Q: If super-heroes have only existed for five years, how has Batman gone through so many Robins?

A: Robin is an intern program -and a very intensive one at that.

What the hell?  An internship?  We are supposed to expect that the bat family that has formed against all odds is instead an internship that brings in employees?  If this is an internship what has happened to the father/son relations ship between Bruce and Dick not to mention Bruce and Tim?  Is that just going to go away?  The sense of family that formed between these men with such troubled pasts is part of what makes their story so compelling.  To get rid of years of history and family for this reboot is ridiculous.

Look at all the animated Batman products there is always a familial relationship between Batman and his sidekicks, just as it has been in the comics.  That is all being thrown out the window right now and for what?  To try and make more money and bring in new readers?  The fact that DC is so willing to get rid of this back-story and history is upsetting to say the least.  I don’t know what DC is doing but its not looking good right now.  This reboot/relaunch might backfire horribly.

Catwoman Debuts

Hot on the heels of the reveal of Henry Cavill in costume as Superman Warner Bros has followed up with the first image of Anne Hathaway in costume as Catwoman.  Don’t worry, I am not violating me pledge for going spoiler free on The Dark Knight Rises.  This image was released on the official site for the newest Batman movie.

As for the picture it doesn’t give away too much.  I find it interesting that Selina Kyle is riding the batpod and it looks to be indoors.  Maybe she’s stealing it from Batman?  It would be in character seeing as she is a thief.  The goggles are interesting as well.  In the comics Catwoman has periodically worn goggles but never anything as technologically fancy as we see in this picture.  Maybe they are only for use during heists to help see security tripwires or something like that.  Based on the previous Christopher Nolan films I really don’t see these goggles being a permanent part of the costume.  I think it will be a temporary thing much like Batman’s sonar vision in The Dark Knight.

I’m sure some people will complain because the Catwoman costume is not skin-tight like in the comics.  But bear in mind Nolan tries to make his movies have an element of realism and it wouldn’t make much sense for a cat burglar to wear a skin-tight suit.  A utility suit like this makes sense so that tools could be carried easily.  Also, there is one last thing to consider.  This might not be the final Catwoman costume and instead a version worn early in the film that will then evolve.  One thing is for sure its fun to start seeing news about The Dark Knight Rises that isn’t spoilers.

The Dark Knight Rises Teaser Poster

We’ve been lacking in some solid news in regards to Christopher Nolan’s third Batman movie entitled The Dark Knight Rises, but now we’ve gotten something solid.  Late yesterday the teaser poster for the new movie was released.  Is it just me or does it have a very Inception-like look?

The Return of Nightwing and Batgirl [DC Reboot]

As I’ve mentioned before, the DC relaunch has the capability to shake a lot of things up.  It would seem the Bat Family is no exception.  Lets start with a few of the big news pieces.

When the relaunch comes into effect in September, it has been reported that Bruce Wayne will be the only man to wear the Batman cowl.  Logically, we can assume this means Dick Grayson is out as Batman.  I was a fan of Dick as Batman, but I never expected to see him remain the Bat forever.  What does this mean for Dick then?  Nothing official has come out stating Dick’s name, but DC has announced that one of the books to be released is Nightwing #1.  That, and the cover has been released (pictured below).

Nightwing #1 Cover

As you can see, Nightwing is one of the DC heroes that has recieved a redesigned costume.  This costume includes gauntlets very similar to those on the Batman suit.  Notice, that I said Nightwing and not Dick Grayson.  Nothing has been announced in regards to Dick wearing the Nightwing mask.  With the color change from blue to red and the slightly more aggressive looking suit one could question whether Dick Grayson is in fact Nightwing.  It has been teased in the past that Jason Todd would assume the mantle of Nightwing and the new costume looks much more like something Jason would wear than Dick.  Factor in the fact that Jason has acted as the Red Hood and Red Robin and its enough to cast doubt in my mind as to whether Dick Grayson has returned to being Nightwing. (Update: When I wrote this post there had been no official announcement as to the identity of Nightwing.  Currently DC has stated that Dick Grayson is Nightwing.  Therefore my conspiracy theory shown above was just a mental exercise.)

Next up, is Batgirl.  IGN has a cover gallery of all the upcoming first issues in the DC Relaunch.  One of which included Batgirl #1, pictured below.  If you look close you’ll see some differences from the current Batgirl Stephanie Brown.

Batgirl #1 Cover

As you may have noticed, this Batgirl does not have blonde hair like the current version portrayed by Stephanie Brown.  With Batgirl now having red hair, it would be a reasonable guess to say that Barbara Gordon, the once original Batgirl, will be re-donning the cowl.  Needless to say, this could be one of the biggest changes yet with this reboot.  One last fact that lends a big more credence to Babs coming back as Batgirl is that longtime Birds of Prey scribe Gail Simone will be writing the new Batgirl books.  Arguably, she is the writer most associated with Barbara Gordon over the last few years.  Of course, one other thing to bear in mind is that much like the possibility of Dick Grayson becoming Nightwing once more, DC has made no announcements regarding the new Batgirl.

Like was mentioned earlier, this could be one of the biggest changes to come from the DC Relaunch.  I have enjoyed Bryan Q. Miller’s work on Batgirl.  However, I do think Barbara Gordon returning to her role of Batgirl could be pretty cool.  There are a couple of questions though.  Firstly, is The Killing Joke being retconned?  In 1988 the Joker shot Barbara in the spine leaving her paralyzed in what is quite possibly one of my favorite Batman books.  I would hate to see this awesome story retconned, and I’m sure the Batman fanboys would agree with me.  Second, if The Killing Joke isn’t retconned how will they give Barbara back the use of her legs and in effect unparalyze her?  Finally, what happens to Oracle?  With Babs out as Batgirl will someone else assume the role of Oracle or will it just go away?  Hopefully someone takes over Oracle’s responsibilities.

There are a lot of questions left to be answered in regards to both the Batgirl and Nightwing relaunches.  Hopefully some facts are cleared up between now and September, but I have a feeling that DC is going to leave fans guessing as long as possible.  I can tell you this much though, if DC is screwing with us and having Stephanie Brown, the current Batgirl, dye her hair red just to mess with the fans I’m going to be really annoyed.

Update: When I wrote this article there had been no official announcement that Barbara Gordon was becoming Batgirl once more.  Since then it has been announced that Babs is returning as Batgirl.
