Nerds of the Round Table

For all things good and nerdy

Deadpool The Movie

Little known fact (sarcasm folks), but I’m a big fan of Marvel’s Merc with a mouth, Wade Wilson aka Deadpool.  As a fan I was utterly shocked at how poorly he was portrayed in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.  That was not the Deadpool I enjoy in the comics.

Shortly after the last X-Men movies there were rumors floating around about a Deadpool spin-off with Ryan Reynolds in the lead role.  Brilliant casting I might add, Reynolds penchant for sarcasm and quips are perfect for Deadpool.  Reynolds has repeatedly expressed his excitement for playing the part of Deadpool.  It’s a fanboy dream to have him in the lead role.

With the Green Lantern franchise starting off and presumably being made into a series of films it was looking less likely that Ryan Reynolds would still be attached to the film.  Enter Empire magazine who was able to secure an interview with Lauren Shuler Donner who is more-or-less the queen of the X-Men movie world.  In regards to Ryan Reynolds, Empire quoted her as saying “He’s very involved, Ryan. He’s working with the writers on the screenplay and it is as much as it is ours.”  Good news for us, Ryan Reynolds seems to have a solid grasp on the character!

In regards to the story of Deadpool presented in X-Men Origins: Wolverine I also have some good news.  Donner stated that the Deadpool film is “a total reboot. We’re either going to pretend that didn’t happen, or mock it, which he could do.”  This answer is yet again totally in line with the character.  Either we get a brand-spanking new back-story or in typical Deadpool fashion it is then mocked and treated as though it never happened.  Perfect yet again!

Based on the article I was already on cloud 9, but Donner closed saying “I’m tellin’ ya, it’s true to the comic. You’ll see all of them. You’ll see Wade Wilson, the good-looking Ryan Reynolds! You’ll see Deadpool in his costume and you’ll see the cancer-scarred face.”

Hopefully this eases a lot fears regarding the story for Deadpool.  Assuming a director is brought on board, Ryan Reynolds is kept on board, and the movie filmed we will all be in good shape… Well on second thought not all fears are eased, but at least the movie sounds like it will be badass!
