Casting A New Superman

We had mentioned earlier this week that Brandon Routh’s Superman contract had expired. Pretty much this means that Brandon Routh might not be playing the role of Superman/Clark Kent in the next Supreman film. Since this is no longer a guarantee it might be good to look at some actors that could play the part. In this post we’ll look at some of the actors that might be able to wear the cape and red tights of the Man of Steel.
Brandon Routh – Personally, I liked how Routh played his part in Superman Returns. The movie was lackluster to say the least but Routh did one hell of a job especially as a relatively unknown at the time. I’d love to give him another chance to take the role on and so something beside act emo on screen. My only concern with Brandon Routh is that I think he’s a little too lanky to be Superman. But that problem can be overlooked.

Tom Welling – If you watch Smallville, you’re bound to be familiar with Tom Welling and his version of Clark Kent. Honestly, I think he has really grown into the role and in recent years I’ve been very impressed with his Clark Kent that is on the verge of becoming the hero he’s fated to be. Welling definitly has the look down and is well practiced at playing the role of a younger Clark Kent. My only concern is how much trouble he would have playing the older Clark Kent and Superman. Its important that Clark Kent and Superman act differntly from each other. Different flavors of the same character if you will. In Smallville, Welling hasn’t had to mix things up like that. The Red-Blue-Blur is an unknown and has only spoken via telephone and a voice synthesizer. Maybe this season in Smallville we’ll get to see more of the transition to Superman where characters will have to shift a bit in personality.

James Caviezel – Back when Bryan Singer started the pre-production on Superman Returns, Caviezel was rumored to be Singer’s favorite choice to play Superman. Caviezel is well known from his work in The Passion of the Christ. I’ve never seen any of his work, or if I have its not memorable to me. I do have to admit, he does have the look to be Superman, but I wouldn’t put him at the top of my list.
David Boreanaz – Boreanaz is most familiar for his roles as the reformed vampire with a soul Angel in Angel and Buffy in addition to Special Agent Booth in Bones. As a fan of his work in the Whedonverse I’m pretty familiar with Boreanaz. That being said I think it would be a very outside shot he would have at being Superman. This is epscially true since he has long been rumored to play the role of Marvel Comic’s Sub-Mariner.
Brendan Fraser – Fraser is probably most well known for his roles in The Mummy movies. I was a big fan of his guest work in Scrubs. I’ve always thought that Fraser was a very good actor, but his work in Scrubs solidified that. Fraser has the acting chops to pull off the role of both Clark Kent and Kal-El/Superman. However, Fraser is probably getting a bit too old for the part.
Josh Hartnett – I think he may have to look of Clark Kent, but he’s never really impressed me with any of his roles. He’s always seems rather wooden and uncomfortable on the big screen. Harrison Ford really showed him up in the movie they did together a few years back.
